Angelas Ashes Theme Analysis - 817 Words
Theme. A lesson in a novel or story that is not directly stated in the book. Between the excerpts Angelas Ashes by Frank McCourt and The Street by Ann Petry is a common theme. The theme that desperate times call for desperate measures. For instance, both the excerpts have evidence that proves these themes through the characters. I might as well take the whole box. My mother would say you might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb, (McCourt 9). Angela was desisive whether or not to take the entire food box but then she remembers what her mother wouldve said. Since her family, is hungry. She thinks that the best option is to take all the food and act like a messanger boy and bring the large box of food home. This shows the theme beacuse it shows that in times of need, sometimes people have to do what is best for themselves instead of thinking about others. The Stre et also shows the same theme by using the wind as an annoyance to the people in the street, an event in the excerpt. ââ¬Å"It wrapped newspaper around their feet entangling them until the people cursed deep in their throats, stamped their feet, and kicked off the paper.â⬠(Petry 2). Due to the wind, the people are inferior and are becoming annoyed with everything that is being thrown at them. This annoyance causes the people the make violent remarks. Because of the wind, the people were forced to do these things even if some of them didnââ¬â¢t want to. Overall, both McCourt and Petry used events to help tell the theme. Finally, the authors demonstrated theme by using the setting of the excerpts. To start, McCourt states â⬠You can look in peopleââ¬â¢s windows and see how cozy it is in their kitchens with fires glowing.â⬠in this exerpt calles Angelaââ¬â¢s Ashes. Angela is jelous of the way that the other families get to live a happy life, but she has to steal from the happy families in order to make her own happy. This shows how when you are not as lucky as others, you tend to do things to make youself feel better than them and you may hurt them in order to do so.
